It is well known to all that Nava Nalanda Mahavihara is firmly determined for the development of Buddhist knowledge, spirit, philosophy, culture and the Buddhist Literature as well. The basic purpose of the establishment of Nava Nalanda Mahavihara was to restore the heritage of the world- renowned Ancient University of Nalanda. Sanskrit, the embodiment of the most refined and sublime aspect of ancient wisdom, occupied the most important position as the only medium of all sorts of academic activities in Ancient Nalanda University. The philosophicaltexts, composition on Buddhist logic and ethical manuals composed by the Ācāryas of Nalanda are in pure and Pāņinian Sanskrit. The study of Sanskrit and Buddhist Sanskrit is essential for understanding Vaipulya sūtras, Avadānas and some of the Sarvātivādī Vinaya texts of Nothern Buddhism. This rich heritage of ancient Indian culture and wisdom preserved in the form of Sanskrit and Buddhist Sanskrit texts can be restored only by the study of Sanskrit. To fulfill the vision of His Excellency Deśaratna Dr. Rajendra Prasad Nava Nalanda Mahavihara was established in 1951. Keeping the above mentioned importance of Sanskrit, the department of Sanskrit was introduced in Nava Nalanda Mahavihara in 1956. Govt. of India granted Deemed Status to NNM in 2006 and in sequence the Sanskrit department was upgraded as a Post Graduate Department. Presently the academic activities of the department is Post Graduate Teaching and Research. Many students have qualified in NET/JRF conducted by UGC. Some have been selected in different Govt. jobs. The department organizes special lectures, workshops, etc. time to time. Sanskrit Spoken Workshop is organized every year.
